DESCRIPTION:NANCOCK – With Nov. 11 marking the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended the First World War\, the Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society is launching a World War I exhibit featuring Eastern Shoremen and their role in America’s part of the conflict. \nBegun in 1914 among European nations\, the war soon spread throughout the world. The United States tried to remain neutral but declared war on Germany in 1917 after several attacks on U.S. ships by German submarines. From across the United States\, thousands of men\, including hundreds from the Eastern Shore\, enlisted in the armed forces. Many would not see home again. \nFrom personal letters\, diaries\, and artifacts\, the story of America in wartime is told through the eyes of Eastern Shoremen. Nineteen-year-old Allen R. Watson of Locustville served with the 115th Infantry. In letters to his family and friends\, he wrote of life at Alabama’s Camp McClellan\, where he trained\, and the horrors of the front lines. Ellet A. Lewis of Grotons served aboard the USS Westerdyk and kept a diary detailing the month leading up to the end of the conflict. John Bowdoin Mears of Keller was an older Navy surgeon on shore leave throughout much of the war\, and he wrote down the goings-on of the Eastern Shore during this time period. \nThe aptly named exhibit “Over Here\, Over There: Shore Stories from the Great War” runs Sept. 21 through Dec. 15 at the society’s Ker Place at 69 Market St. in Onancock. Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. There is no admission fee\, but donations are appreciated. \nBe among the first to see the exhibit by attending the free opening reception on the evening of Friday\, Sept. 21\, from 6 to 8 p.m. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served\, and a cash bar will be open \n

DESCRIPTION:The Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society will host local author Jeanette Treadwell Darnell for a presentation of her recently released creation of historical fiction\, “The Poulsons of Onancock Creek\,” on Friday\, Aug. 3. \nThe audience will experience the War Between the States through the eyes of one young Onancock girl\, Charlotte Poulson\, whose family and future were forever altered. Darnell will read excerpts\, answer audience questions\, and sign books\, which will be available for sale at the event. \nEight years ago\, Darnell’s family decided on a destination Christmas holiday and came from western North Carolina to Onancock\, renting a cottage on Onancock Creek. She and her daughters happened across a small family burial plot along the north branch. “An old cemetery found me\, and I felt there was a story I was supposed to write\,” Darnell\, who now resides in Onancock\, said. \nThe work opens in October 1856 with Charlotte’s sister Kate’s wedding to Corbin Fletcher\, who would become a young Confederate surgeon. Their tombstone at Cokesbury farm and the desire to uncover their tender story were the inspiration for the book. \n“The Poulson biography would morph into a historical fiction\, with the foundation being the results of my research\,” said Darnell. \nThe presentation and book signing will begin at 6 p.m. Aug. 3\, at Ker Place\, 69 Market St.\, in Onancock. DESCRIPTION:As part of the Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society’s Last Plank campaign\, please consider purchasing a personalized cast bronze plaque to be mounted in the recently renovated pier area at Hopkins & Bro. Store. For $300\, your name\, your family’s name\, or the name of your business will be displayed on a 3″x10″ plank plaque. For $750\, a dedication will be inscribed on an 8″x8″ plaque that will wrap a piling. At $2\,500\, a dedication will be inscribed on a prominently displayed 5″x24″ finger pier plaque. Proceeds will go toward additional expenses incurred while the Historical Society has been renovating the pier area as part of a three-year capital campaign.  They include integrating the dock and patio as well as the purchase and installation of a commercial handicap ramp. Work at the wharf also has shown how much the building’s exterior needs painting. ESVHS recently widened the deck and built the bulkhead taller. All finger piers and pilings were replaced\, and the once-snaking bulkhead stands straight.
